OVERVIEW
Collaborating with engineering operations and security compliance teams, we built Custom Tracker Desktop to replace manual timesheets and heavy, intrusive monitoring agents. In two months, we shipped a native-grade desktop daemon and cloud analytics suite.
THE PROBLEM
Distributed engineering agencies needed accurate project cost attribution for client billing, but developers hated manual end-of-week timesheets and rejected bloated third-party trackers that drained laptop batteries and raised privacy concerns.
When developers worked offline or switched rapidly between repositories, existing timers lost context and produced inaccurate utilization reports.
Legacy state diagnostic & bottleneck mapping for Custom Tracker Desktop.

HOW WE FRAMED THE IDEA
We framed the tool around developer trust and zero-overhead telemetry: the desktop agent had to consume less than 1% CPU, work 100% offline, and give users transparent privacy controls before syncing.
By mapping active IDE workspaces and project branches to client cost codes automatically, the system made time tracking simpler and more consistent.
ARCHITECTURAL THESIS
“Accurate engineering telemetry didn't come from surveillance, it came from an ultra-lightweight, privacy-first daemon that automated project attribution.”
THINK & BUILD
We architected a cross-platform desktop agent (Windows, macOS, Linux) with an encrypted local SQLite buffer that batches telemetry pulses to a Node.js, Redis, and PostgreSQL cloud API.
The Next.js command dashboard aggregates team velocity, billable utilization ratios, and automated client invoice exports in real time.

THE SOLUTION
Custom Tracker Desktop achieved <0.8% CPU overhead and 99.4% timesheet compliance across distributed engineering teams, cutting monthly client billing preparation from days to minutes.
